Bratzles, Brazelis, or Bratzelis



The smell of Christmas, for me, is Bratzles cooking. Someone really should patent a Scentsy or candle scent called Fresh Baked Bratzles. (I'd buy them out!)Bratzles are a traditional Swiss cookie that have been made in my family for decades.
Bratzles

1lb Butter

2 c. Sugar
2 tsp salt
1/2 c. Cream
2 Eggs
2 Heaping Tbsp Cinnamon (I mean really heaping!!)
5-7 Cups Flour


Directions

Melt Butter in large pan over med/low heat. Stir in sugar and take off heat.
Add cream salt and cinnamon till mixed. Let cool slightly. Mix in eggs and add flour a cup at a time until a nice soft dough forms. Plug in iron and let heat up for 7-10 minutes. Put a pie tin behind the iron to catch all the excess butter that presses off the cookies. Roll dough into balls and place on iron, press firmly and let cook until golden in color. Around 20 seconds. Yields about 200 cookies. (With 8 on a plate you'll get about 24-28 goodie plates.) I did find a link here to purchase a Brazeli Iron

Oh wow...I love those things. I remember your family bringing over a plate of bratzles to our house every Christmas. Those became one of the main things we looked forward to eating during the holidays. I miss them.

One of my favorite Christmas memories is fighting over Bratzles with my brothers and sister as soon as you dropped them off at our house.

Does anyone know where you can actually purchase one of these irons? I have one that my dad purchased through the Swiss Consulate years ago (before Internet!) and I'd like to get one for my daughter and daughter-in-law. Swiss Cookie making has been passed down each generation in our family for years!

Here is mine:
1KG flor
200gr grated cheese (use mex.mix)
250gr butter
2 eggs
150ml milk
175ml sour creem
1 teaspoon yeast
2 teaspoon sugar
1.5 tblsp salt
2 tblsp caraway seed.
Mix the yeast sugar into warm milk, and let it sit for 15 mins.
put all the rest of the ingredients into a mixing bowl, or a dough mixer/food processor. put the levened yest mix into it and knead till smooth. form small balls and bake them with your iron.
You can substitute the flour with corn flour for gluten free, scrap the eggs, and use milk and margarin for vegan and you can also add more seeds for multi grain, 2 table spoon of each sesame, poppy, flacks, chia, etc.
